Pregnancy is a time of many physical and emotional changes as women undergo the amazing process of creating a new life. However these changes can also put a lot of strain on the mother.
A massage during pregnancy can help to relieve problems such as backache, pelvic strains and heavy or tired legs. It can also help you to relax and mums to be often report sleeping better after a treatment.
A typical session would involve a combination of various techniques including – Swedish and Remedial Massage, Shiatsu, Lymphatic Drainage and Reiki. Appropriate exercises, stretches, breathing and visualizations may be incorporated as well.
The main question people ask is –
‘How can I get a relaxing massage when I can’t lie on my front?’
For most sessions you will be on your side using specialist ‘Body Support Cushions’, which allow you to feel fully supported, comfortable and relaxed (falling asleep is not uncommon). I also sometimes work with pregnant clients on the floor.
You can see a video here, which is a short overview of the training I did with WellMother.
A session would always involve a consultation, massage treatment and a chat at the end to review what was done. The requirements of the mother will vary depending on their individual experience but also due to the stage of the pregnancy. Some benefits that may be felt in the different trimesters are outlined in the following links –
