Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy, an energy which is all around us. It can be hard to explain and is best experienced first hand in order to fully appreciate the benefits. If you are feeling generally 'out of sorts' and unsure what might help, then Reiki might be just the thing to bring you back into balance.
The Principles of Reiki
Just for today do not worry,
Just for today do not anger,
Honour your parents, teachers and elders,
Earn your living honestly,
Show gratitude to every living thing.
Natural Healing
Reiki is a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Dr Mikao Usui (d. 1926).
People often assume that as an Eastern discipline, Reiki must be linked to Buddhism or religion in some way. However there is no belief system attached to Reiki, the only necessary ‘belief’ is an acceptance of the universal energy all around us. Reiki can be used alongside other complementary therapies and conventional treatments. It is entirely safe for all ages, and situations, including during pregnancy or terminal diseases.
A Reiki Treatment
Reiki is a different type of treatment from a massage, and receiving one from a practitioner is a very simple process, where the client simply lies on a couch and relaxes. You will be made comfortable with cushions and covers and gentle music will be played in the background. The main thing is for the recipient to be as comfortable as possible whether they are lying down or sitting. There is no need to remove any clothing as the practitioner simply places their hands gently, in non-intrusive positions, around the body. The whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms. A full treatment usually takes about 1 hour with each position held for several minutes.
Which conditions can Reiki help?
Reiki works at several levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Sometimes acute injuries may be helped to heal very quickly while more chronic ailments will takes longer. In some cases such as terminal illness, there can be great benefit and enhancement of the quality of life by giving a sense of peace and acceptance during the time remaining.
