Pregnancy is a time of many physical and emotional changes, and a time when women become more aware of their bodies and the amazing process they are performing in creating a new life. However, these changes can also put a lot of strain on the mother. Pregnancy massage can help to relieve problems such as backache, pelvic strains and heavy or tired legs.
A typical session would involve a combination of various techniques, some familiar to those who have had massages before, and others quite specific for pregnancy. Techniques used include - Swedish and Remedial Massage, Shiatsu, Lymphatic Drainage and, as I am a Reiki Practitioner, Reiki can also be incorporated into the massage.
The main question people ask is 'How can a pregnant woman get a relaxing massage when she can't lie on her tummy?' For most sessions you will be on your side using specialist 'Body Support Cushions', which allow you to feel fully supported, comfortable and relaxed (falling asleep is not uncommon). I also usually work with pregnant clients on a special Shiatsu floor mat, allowing you to feel totally safe. For earlier stages, when you are still able to lie on your front, you may still be on a normal massage table, but we will also introduce the side-lying position.
A session would always involve a consultation, massage treatment and a chat at the end to review what was done. Appropriate exercises, stretches, breathing and visualizations may be incorporated as well.
The requirements of the mother will vary depending on their individual experience but also due to the stage of the pregnancy. Some benefits that may be felt in the different trimesters are outlined in the following links -
