Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy, an energy which is all around us.

Natural Healing

Reiki is the name given to a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Dr Mikao Usui (d. 1926). The Reiki taught today by Reiki Masters has been passed down from teacher to student using these original methods as developed by Dr Usui.

People often mistake energy work or spiritual approaches to health as a form of ‘religion’, and assume that as an Eastern discipline, Reiki must be linked to Buddhism. However there is no belief system attached to Reiki, the only necessary ‘belief’ is an acceptance of the universal energy all around us. Reiki can be used alongside other complementary therapies and conventional treatments. It is entirely safe for all ages, and situations, including during pregnancy or terminal diseases.

A Reiki Treatment

Reiki is a different type of treatment from a massage, and receiving one from a practitioner is a very simple process, where the client simply lies on a couch and relaxes. You will be made comfortable with cushions and covers and gentle music will be played in the background. The main thing is for the recipient to be as comfortable as possible whether they are lying down or sitting. There is no need to remove any clothing as the practitioner simply places their hands gently, in non-intrusive positions, around the body. The whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms. A full treatment usually takes about 1 hour with each position held for several minutes.

Which conditions can Reiki help?

Reiki works at several levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Sometimes acute injuries may be helped to heal very quickly while more chronic ailments will takes longer. In some cases such as terminal illness, there can be great benefit and enhancement of the quality of life by giving a sense of peace and acceptance during the time remaining.

Reiki healing requires no special equipment so treatments can be given anywhere and at any time. The practitioner is simply a channel through which the energy is drawn by the need or imbalance in the recipient. It is a gentle, non-invasive treatment, which benefits the recipient as and where they require it.

As running water smoothes the jagged edges of a rock until it is small enough to roll away, Reiki flows to the areas of need, soothing pain and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself. Reiki restores balance in one's life. (Reiki Association)
